Macau, a one-of-a-kind tourist destination
Situated on the Pearl River Delta, Macau was historically a fishing village. The Portuguese arrived and settled in the area in the mid-16th century, and thus Macau's architecture, art, traditions and food reflect the integration of Chinese and Portuguese cultures.
After the handover in 1999, Macau became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and exercises a high degree of autonomy under the "One country, two systems" principle.
In 2005, the Historic Centre of Macau was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, due to its unique historical and cultural landscape. Macau is currently positioning itself as a “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure” as it elevates its status as a quality international tourist destination.
